Big changes are coming to Muzaffarpur Junction. Once the redevelopment is complete, the station area will triple in size, and passenger amenities will significantly improve. Seating capacity will more than double, and parking space will increase by 2.5 times, according to an internal report prepared for the Railway Minister’s review.

More Platforms, More Comfort

Currently, the station has 8 platforms, but 4 more are proposed, taking the total to 12 in the future. Though platform number 6 is temporarily closed, the existing platforms support 1,604 passenger seats. After redevelopment:

  • Total seating capacity will increase to 3,410
  • 940 seats will be available directly on platforms
  • 2,470 seats will be placed at other passenger waiting areas

Ticket Counters: From 24 to 32

Ticketing will also get a boost. The new station building will have 32 ticket counters (reserved + unreserved), compared to 24 counters currently.

Distribution of counters across new buildings:

  • NDTB: 12 counters
  • CTB: 3 counters
  • BIC: 5 counters
  • SDTB: 4 counters
  • MLCP: 8 counters

Presently, ticket counters are available at only three locations.

Parking Expansion: 194 to 456 ECS

The station currently offers 194 ECS (Equivalent Car Space) of paid parking across 4 areas — one on the south and three on the north side. Post-redevelopment, this will increase to 456 ECS, including:

  • North Side: 238 ECS
  • MLCP (Multi-Level Car Parking): 184 ECS
  • South Side: 76 ECS

The parking system will be modernized, ensuring smoother vehicle flow and better security.
