Relief for Bihar Residents: No Extra Cost for Electric Poles and Wires
In a major relief to consumers across Bihar, the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has revised its earlier decision regarding electricity connection charges. Now, residents applying for a new connection will no longer have to pay for the installation of electric poles and wires. The burden of these infrastructure costs will now be borne by the electricity company.
This amendment to the December 2024 order was made after the electricity company’s plea to simplify the connection process. The commission stated that the new rule will apply to all connections ranging from 1 to 150 kilowatts. Beyond that, consumers will still need to bear the infrastructure costs.
New Connection Rates at a Glance
- Single Phase (up to 3 kW): ₹2700 – unchanged
- 3 kW to 7 kW: ₹1000 per kW (earlier ₹900/kW)
- Low Tension Three Phase (up to 5 kW): ₹4500 – unchanged
- 5 kW to 19 kW: ₹1500 per kW (earlier ₹1000/kW)
- 20 kW to 44 kW: ₹2000 per kW (earlier ₹1000/kW)
- High Tension (45 kW to 150 kW): ₹7000 per kW – fixed
Major Relief on Pole Charges
Previously, if the pole-to-home distance exceeded 35 meters, consumers had to pay ₹1612 per pole span. This cost used to increase with every 50 meters. That system has now been scrapped. Similarly, a charge of ₹4795 per pole in LT three-phase and higher capacity categories has also been waived.
Why Was the Rule Changed?
The electricity company argued that estimating pole and wire costs caused delays in giving timely connections. The regulatory body agreed and removed the rule altogether. Now, the company will include these infrastructure expenses in its annual tariff petition, which will be reviewed and adjusted accordingly.
